Abstract

The use of open-source software in higher education continues to increase, particularly through the adoption of GitHub as an academic collaboration platform. Despite its widespread use in software development activities, studies examining GitHub acceptance among university students from a behavioral perspective remain limited. This study analyzes the factors influencing students’ acceptance and actual use of GitHub by applying the Extended Theory of Planned Behavior (ETPB), which integrates constructs from the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) into the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) framework. A quantitative approach was employed using the Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method to analyze questionnaire data collected from 98 student respondents. The results show that Perceived Ease of Use significantly affects Perceived Usefulness, which in turn has a strong influence on Attitude. In addition, Attitude, Subjective Norm, and Perceived Behavioral Control significantly influence Behavioral Intention, while Behavioral Intention and Perceived Behavioral Control affect the Actual Use of GitHub. These findings indicate that GitHub acceptance among students is shaped not only by technical considerations but also by social influence and perceived behavioral control. Overall, this study confirms that the ETPB model is effective in explaining GitHub usage behavior in higher education.
